The Ohio Afterschool Network is pleased to offer this special 90-minute virtual Math Hoops Training as a pre-conference workshop. NBA Math Hoops leverages the game of basketball and the NBA/WNBA to engage students with math and social-emotional learning skills through a digital board game, curriculum, mobile app, and community program. All resources for the program are completely free of cost for educators. The Math Hoops program is geared towards grades 4-8, but students a little younger and older can benefit, as well.

The Cavaliers Math Hoops training camp experience will comprehensively detail all aspects of the program, including features built for classroom, out-of-school, and at-home usage. Educators will have the opportunity to fully engage in the core program, learn best practices for implementation, and secure in-kind access to the program curriculum and digital game.

To begin each session, Learn Fresh staff will share details about the program’s creation and path to scale, learning more about the founding process and the rigorous evaluation behind the program’s evolution and success to date.

Educators will then be introduced to the core program curriculum, which includes a series of twelve lessons, focused on math, social-emotional development, and gameplay strategy. This discussion will dovetail into an introduction to the digital Math Hoops board game. Participants will be guided through the rules of the game and will interactively engage in the process of taking turns and making shots!

After discovering gameplay, educators will be introduced to all program logistics and supplemental program experiences, like the NBA Math Hoops mobile app and championship tournament series. The mobile app is a supplemental, K-8 math experience, available for free across all Android and iOS devices. Students and families can download the app to continue sharpening core skills while away from the classroom. Through an online program management platform called the Learn Fresh Coaches Association (LFCA), which links directly with the digital board game and mobile app, educators can assign games and set difficult ratings for each student’s gameplay experience. Learn Fresh staff will also share how educators can participate in data tracking processes and earn special incentives for their students.

To close, the Learn Fresh team will discuss best practices for implementations with the participating educators. The program has always been highly adaptable across classroom and out-of-school spaces.

We will offer this training twice to accommodate different schedules:
