News from the field…. here’s what a few of Ohio’s Afterschool Programs are doing to celebrate Lights On Afterschool on Thursday, October 20th…

“We are hosting the Lights On Afterschool HONK FOR AFTERSCHOOL event. We are having our school agers throughout Northwest Ohio go outside and honk for afterschool on 10/20/16 from 4:00 pm – 4:15 pm” – Melissa Ikes, Afterschool Specialist YWCA USA

“The Greater Cleveland Neighborhood Centers Association in cooperation with the Cleveland Museum of Natural History (CMNH) is hosting a Lights On Afterschool event at the CMNH on Thursday, October 20, 2016, 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Students and staff from over twenty afterschool programs in Cleveland have been invited. We expect 350 students and staff to attend. The event will include access to all CMNH exhibits including the new Perkins Wildlife Center & Woods Garden. In addition, exhibitors with interactive activities from over fifteen community organizations will be featured.” – Lee DeAngelis, Director of Support Services for the Greater Cleveland Neighborhood Centers Associaions

“Plans for Lights On Afterschool include an open House/Site Tour. Activities will include a glowing Science Palooza – Hands-on science competition that will have students making a straw tower, conducting an egg drop, and building a catapult. We’ll have glow stick activities also.” –  Horizon Education Centers, Clevleland OH
“We are hosting a video challenge on the Action for Children Facebook page in which programs are being encouraged to create a video depicting why afterschool is important to them.” – Brittany Jackson, Action For Children, Columbus OH
