Advocacy Updates

Nichelle gave a national update on the fourth iteration of COVID19 support coming from the federal government. She provided a recap on the April 9th Afterschool Alliance policy call. Ohio’s portion of the CARES act is $462.8M for K-12 Schools, $381M for Higher Ed and $103.9M for the Governor’s emergency relief grants. See the power point slides HERE.

CLASP has released a report on the gap between what is currently being allocated in CCDBG funding ($3.5B) and what is needed ($50B). Currently Ohio’s share is $113.5M. **Flagging that is based on the number of school-age children in Ohio… and reiterating that the Census is critical to our work! read the CLASP report HERE.

The 4th iteration of US funding is being drafted now. The Afterschool Alliance is asking for an additional $500M for 21st CCLC, in addition to emergency relief funds for youth organizations and non profits, additional meal flexibility and PD for providers around trauma responsive care.

The Alliance also has a couple of good webinars coming up – find out more HERE.

From the state level, Nichelle shared that OAN is working on developing an op ed that will be able to be pushed out by supporters and members about the importance of continuing to resource Afterschool programs during this time.

Additionally, next week is Afterschool Professionals Week and OAN will be doing a social media virtual challenge around the work that Afterschool Professionals do behind the scenes. Follow OAN on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. Be a part of this fun event to help the world better understand our profession!
