Background: In October of 2019, two important resources for Afterschool advocacy were released.

The first was the Ohio Afterschool Network’s data map and companion document, the State of Afterschool in Ohio.

The second was a report from the Council for a Strong America called From Risk to Opportunity: Afterschool Programs Keep Kids Safe.

Legislators may not know about these documents and would benefit from help from you. Offer these resources – and yourself as an expert for

EMAIL

Here is some sample language to email to your Representative, State Senator, Mayor or other key stakeholders in your community:

Good morning/afternoon <Legislator’s Name>,

As an individual who is committed to supporting youth, I wanted to share with you two recent resources that demonstrate the value of high quality Afterschool programs to reduce crime,

The first resource is a map of Afterschool and Summer Learning programs in Ohio. OAN’s map clearly shows that Ohio is under serving k-12 youth and that more programs are needed.This map can be found on the Ohio Afterschool Network’s website, oanohio.org. Our program is listed on that map, and you might be interested to see how many other programs are currently serving youth in our <district,county,community>. OAN has also released a companion document to this map, a report called The State of Afterschool in Ohio.

Another resource that was recently released was a report from Fight Crime Invest in Kids, From Risk to Opportunity: Afterschool Programs Keep Kids Safe. Did you know that the peak time for juvenile crime is between 2:00PM and 6:00PM? Did you also know that juvenile crime is down in direct correlation with the increase of quality Afterschool programs? Programs like <your program> and others across our state are helping to decrease crime by giving kids a safe place to go and be productive after school. You can read more information specific to Ohio HERE.

<add information about what your organization is doing to support youth>

I would love to be of assistance to you and talk to you more about these reports. Could I set up a call with your office so we could talk more?

Sincerely,

<your name>
