About S3
Recently, OSU, ODE, OAN and Voices for Ohio’s
Children developed the following information to
clarify the guiding outline for the S3 project.
In addition to this email update,
all documents and information are
available
here.

The OSU College of Social Work
Team, Dawn Anderson-Butcher and Rebecca Wade-Midivian
have been conducting case study and resource
scan interviews across the state and
synthesizing great data regarding extended
learning opportunities over the past several
months. The S3 preliminary report is anticipated
soon. In addition, OAN members had the
opportunity to take part in a statewide
survey distributed by OAN for
this work.
Have you heard about all of the
exciting recent initiatives surrounding student
success in Ohio? Now is the time for S3
Leadership and Advisory Team members to learn
about these efforts, such as the P2C2 Council’s
recent press conference and report on attaining
student success, and incorporate them into your
conversations regarding extended learning
opportunities. A press
release on the Governor’s website is at
here.
The report can be downloaded
here.
The S3 team is making strides to
collaborate and connect with the leadership
teams of these other groups. Liz Nusken has
developed an alignment of initiatives document
for your review. Please contact
Carrie Baker of
Liz Nusken with thoughts or feedback!
OAN, in anticipation of the S3 Case Study and
Resource Scan, has also re-energized its Policy
and Funding Committee (PFC) efforts. For more
information on OANs three budget/policy
priorities, as well as talking points regarding
the recent Governor’s Education reform
initiative and the OAN PFC Toolkit, please visit
here and click on Policy and Funding.

Akron Public Schools was one of seven cities
invited by the C.S. Mott Foundation to submit a
proposal for piloting a New Day for Learning
model. A New Day for Learning in Akron is
envisioned through Project-Based Learning for
everyone involved with the district’s young
people: educators, community groups, faith-based
organizations, supplemental education providers
etc., with the objective of providing a seamless
transition from school day to extended learning
opportunities. Project-Based Learning and the
extended learning opportunities will help to
address the societal disparities that contribute
to low academics through access to diverse
enrichment experiences not generally available
to our struggling neighborhoods. Project-Based
Learning (PBL) will be a fundamental
instructional technique. The thrust of this
grant will be to provide professional
development for all organizations with the
understanding that teamwork is embedded in PBL
design – not only for students but also for
educators, community organizations etc. – and
that teamwork and interdependence creates the
best learning experiences for children and
youth.
Representative Vernon Sykes,
State School Board Member Heather Licata, and
ODE’s Dr. Susan Tave Zelman were among those who
provided letters of support for the district.
Desiree Bolden, After School Program Specialist,
submitted the grant and will learn by November
if it is one of 3 selected for funding.
Please note that the S3 ‘staff
team” meeting bi-weekly or so to talk about
issues and follow up items to move the project
along. Our minutes can be found by clicking
here, then clicking on S3 Initiative.
To better keep track of and formalize the
time determined relationship of the S3 advisory
team, a Sign Up form is attached. The S3 Sign Up
Form can be found
here.
Thanks for your continued
participation!
Guiding mission of S3 Project:
The Guiding Mission of the
Supporting Student Success Project (S3) is to
study, integrate and build collaboration and
buy-in for a well-researched and well-informed
policy agenda that will maximize funding for and
expand access to summer and afterschool
programs.
Major components of the S3
Project include:
Developing and conducting a case
study conducted by The Ohio State University
(OSU) in conjunction with the Ohio Department of
Education (ODE) to analyze two Akron extended
learning opportunities: Akron Afterschool and
Perkins Middle School, as well as the broader
context of capacity of these areas that lead to
student success.
Convening a team of key decision
makers and stakeholders in order to guide the
work of the S3 project mission, case study
results, and ‘next steps’ toward implementation
of the policy agenda. |
