Supporting Student Success Initiative

Ohio’s Supporting Student Success (S3) Initiative

In May 2007 Ohio was one of six states selected to participate in Supporting Student Success: The Promise of Expanded Learning Opportunities, a joint initiative of the National Governors Association for Best Practices, the National Conference of State Legislatures, the Council of Chief State School Officers, with support from the C.S. Mott Foundation.

Ohio joins New Hampshire, Colorado, Rhode Island, Iowa and Massachusetts in receiving a $50,000 grant and technical assistance from the partnering agencies to integrate extended learning opportunities into the state’s education plan over eighteen months. This initiative builds on the “A New Day for Learning; A report from the Time, Learning and Afterschool Task Force” which was funded by the C.S. Mott Foundation and published in 2006 (www.edutopia.org/anewdayforlearning).

Extended learning opportunities (ELOs) are educational and enriching activities that take place afterschool, summers and weekends that have been shown to provide positive developmental opportunities, improve academic performance and reduce risk taking behaviors.

Guiding mission of Ohio’s S3 Project:

The Guiding Mission of the Supporting Student Success Project (S3) is to study, integrate and build collaboration and buy-in for a well-researched and well-informed policy agenda that will maximize funding for and expand access to summer and afterschool programs.

Major components of Ohio’s S3 Project include:
Developing and conducting a case study conducted by The Ohio State University (OSU) in conjunction with the Ohio Department of Education (ODE) to analyze two Akron extended learning opportunities: Akron Afterschool and Perkins Middle School, as well as the broader context of capacity of these areas that lead to student success.

Convening a team of key decision makers and stakeholders in order to guide the work of the S3 project mission, case study results, and ‘next steps’ toward implementation of the policy agenda.
